Welcome to Generation Gap where we ask you about your favorite generation of a certain multi-generational car nameplate. Then, explain why your choice is right to the rest of us uneducated folks.

Here we are on the other side of AP testing because I finished the last of four today! It feels so great to be finally done with all the constant pressure, for anyone currently studying for finals, all my sympathies go out to you. Anyways, we’re not here to discuss school, Oppo is for cars! Well, the Suburban isn’t exactly a car, but we love it all the same! Which of the SUV generations is your favorite?

Here are the options:

Sixth Generation [1967 - 1972] and Veraneio

Hard pick between eight and ten. The face lifted 8 is great

I have an affinity for the seventh generation just because I spent so much time in them growing up. They weren’t exactly reliable, but they were easy to fix. We once rebuilt the rear differential on one that had stranded us in the middle of the woods in central PA with parts found in the closest town and whatever we had in the toolbox.

73-91 all the way. The 81-91 being my favorites.

I think that sums up the old American car experience. My dad talks about my grandfather always fiddling with the carbs on their old Oldsmobiles and Buicks to get them to run better. After a short stint with a Jag, they got a little Toyota truck and never looked back. When someone gave them a Dodge Shadow as a gift though, they realized they weren’t missing much...

Probably the best American car from the Malaise era that has ever existed.

love the styling of the 67-72..... but the 73-91 were built just as tough, and were made with a “disposable” body. NOBODY feels bad cutting one up, or pushing a tree over with the fender. that indefference makes it a bit superior in terms of “get it done-ness”.

ive always felt guilty mangling the fenders on the ‘71. the squarebodys, not nearly so much..... sad thing is that they are getting used up at an alarming rate. nearly all the ones that were just falling out of trees, are GONE, hauled off when metal prices had peaked. i been debating on whether or not to spend some $$$ and stock up before i cant.

I’d take an 8th gen over a 10th gen. To me, the GMT900 looks like a bloated blob of plastic that’s trying too hard to be a car. I especially dislike those body-colored bumpers.

If ever there was a candidate for ICON, a 91 would be amazing with a resto-mod.

yeah, i know.

but at right $100 per fender. double that, for the whole front and..... THAT adds up quick. usually you can buy an old truck for just south of $500. mind you, its not going to be exactly pristine, and it might be missing its driveline, but you get the BULK of an entire truck.

Kinja'd!!!

THIS, was $250. yeah, its rough. stack a FEW together and you can put together a mostly decent one.

I will always have a soft spot for the later 7th-gen ones. I like the 8th-gen too, which seems like an overall refinement.

For me, the design starts to take a downhill turn with the 9th-gen, bottoming out with the awful-looking 10th gen. I like how they sharpened up the edges again for the current generation, but the whole package looks a little too upscale to me, too much like a Cadillac.

I wouldn’t mind seeing what ICON could do with one of these. I had an 85 that was fully loaded and it was niiice. Power was lacking but that was it.

The best looking is the 7th generation. Mechanically the 9th generation is a favorite, and I love the way they look. 8th gens have a great look too.

GMT-400. My family had a ‘94 suburban from about ‘98 to ‘06. We affectionately called it the tank.
